We are a volunteer non-profit organization working to preserve and protect what remains of one of the most ecologically significant and biodiverse areas in the City of Ottawa, known as the South March Highlands Conservation Forest (SMHCF).
The beautiful and scenic South March Highlands Conservation Forest lies within the original 1,100 hectare South March Highlands geographic area located at the southern end of the Carp Hills on a bedrock-based upland and extending northward from Kanata to the Ottawa River in West Carleton. Comprising 457 hectares of diverse habitats ranging from woodlands and wetlands to rocky outcrops, the Conservation Forest straddles the line between urban and rural Ottawa.
Over the past decades, the fragile ecosystems of the South March Highlands have come under increasing pressure from adjacent human development resulting in habitat fragmentation and destruction.
Without careful stewardship, what remains of the significant ecology of the South March Highlands Conservation Forest will soon be lost.
We recognize that the South March Highlands Conservation Forest is located on the traditional, unceded, and unsurrendered territory of the Anishinàbe Algonquin Nation. The Algonquin people have inhabited and stewarded this land, including the South March Highlands, since time immemorial. These statements express our gratitude, respect, and a commitment to reconciliation with the Anishinàbe Algonquin Nation, as well as our commitment to the preservation and restoration of our relationship with this land.
